Procedures
Our Gastrointestinal (GI) and Liver Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Swapnil Sharma, performs HPB surgery in Chhattisgarh. Common HPB surgical procedures include:
- Liver Resection
Liver resection is performed when a part of the liver affected with cancer or tumor or metastatic disease needs to be removed. Resection also increases the survival rate of patients with liver cancer.
- Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
It is the removal of the gall bladder if the patient has painful gall stones or chronic cholecystitis. This is a minimally invasive procedure for removing the gall bladder.
- Pancreatic Resection
Pancreatic resection includes Whipple’s procedure, distal pancreatectomy, and central pancreatectomy. Whipple’s procedure is performed for pancreatic head cancer and periampullary carcinoma. Distal pancreatectomy is performed for cancer of the body and tail of the pancreas.
- Acute and chronic pancreatitis surgery
These procedures include pancreatic necrosectomy for acute pancreatitis. Lateral pancreaticojejunostomy and Frey’s procedure for chronic pancreatitis.
- Bile duct surgery
When bile duct stones can’t be removed endoscopically, bile duct exploration is performed and stones are removed. Sometimes there is a narrowing of the bile duct (stricture), which needs to be removed and bile ducts are joined with the intestine (hepaticojejunostomy). There can be cancer in the bile duct (cholangiocarcinoma) for which the bile duct is removed with or without part of the liver.
- Liver cyst surgery
There are various types of surgery which is performed depending upon the type of liver cyst. These can be cyst deroofing, liver resection, enucleation, cystectomy, pericystectomy.
